The Patterson residential community is located in the southwestern area of Calgary, Alberta. Sarcee Trail represents its northern and eastern border, Bow Trail is its southern boundary, Old Banff Coach Road is its southern boundary and 69 Street is its western border. Before the land was annexed in 1956 to the City of Calgary, the land on which the neighbourhood stands was predominantly owned by the Patterson family and consisted mainly of acreage. The land was to have been the original location of the University of Alberta, but the University’s campus was ultimately constructed in Edmonton.

Established as a residential neighbourhood in 1983, Patterson had 2,026 residents in 2006. Its median household income in 2000 was $78,786. Approximately 71 percent of Patterson’s dwellings are single-family homes, and the average home in this category sold for $ 1,043,230 in 2009. The average condominium unit sold for $359,057 in the same year. In 2000, it was reported that 23 percent of its housing stock was used for rental purposes.
Public schools include Olympic Heights or Wildwood elementary schools, Vincent Massey Junior High and Ernest Manning High School. Private schools include John Costello Elementary School and St. Michael’s Elementary and Junior High School. Private high schools include St. Mary’s and Bishop Carroll.
