Altadore

Located in Calgary’s southwest area, Altadore is a neighbourhood that was established in the year 1945. Its boundaries include 14th Street to the east, Crowchild Trail to the west, 26th Avenue to the south and 50th Avenue to the north.

According to 2006 census data, Altadore’s population was 8,175. The 2000 census indicated a median household income of $53,786. Also in 2000, 37 percent of Altadore’s dwellings were apartment or condominium buildings, and 41 percent of its housing stock was used as rental properties.

Schools include the public Altadore Elementary School (Kindergarten through Sixth Grade) and the Dr. Oakley School (students with learning disabilities, Third Grade through Ninth Grade). Aspen Woods

Aspen Woods is a newer, affluent residential community in Calgary, Alberta. It lies in the southwest portion of the metro area. The area was annexed in 1956 to the City of Calgary. Established in 2001 as a community, Aspen Woods consists mainly of single-family houses as well as acreage. Its population in 2006 consisted of 898 residents who, in 2000, had a median household income of about $134,000. In 2009, the average home sold for $1,445,921.

Aspen Woods is bordered by the West Springs community to the north, Springbank Hill to the south, Strathcona Park and Christie Park to the east and Springbank to the west. The neighbourhood includes eight playgrounds as well as its own community centre.

Public schools in Aspen Woods include the Westgate and Olympic Heights elementary schools, Bishop Pinkham and Vincent Massey junior high schools as well as Western Canada and Ernest Manning high schools. Private elementary schools include Holy Name and St. Joan of Arc Elementary and Junior High School. In addition to St. Joan of Arc, junior high students may attend St. Michael. Private high schools include Bishop Carroll and St. Mary’s.

Bankview

Situated in the southwest region of Calgary, Bankview’s history dates back to 1882, when William Nimmons bought the land on which the neighbourhood lies from the Hudson’s Bay Company. Nimmons founded the 3-D Bar Ranch on the land, and subsequently added a sandstone quarry. He also built the Mount Royal Theatre. Nimmons’ home, constructed in 1884, was later designated a heritage building and is located in Bankview’s northeast area.

Nimmons began to subdivide his land in 1902, selling it to settlers that had recently arrived in the area. The City of Calgary purchased the rest of Nimmons’ land in 1908. In 1950, the neighbourhood saw a significant redesign that permitted the construction of apartment buildings. A redevelopment program is in place for Bankview.

According to the 2008 census, 5,279 people live in Bankview, representing a four-percent increase versus 2004. People in the neighbourhood are highly mobile, with 41.3 percent having moved in one year (2005-2006). Its 2005 median income of $42,943 increased by nearly 16 percent since 2000.

Information from the 2006 census shows that apartment and condominium buildings comprise 83 percent of Bankview’s homes, and single-family homes account for 12 percent of the community’s housing stock. Rental properties account for 69 percent of the dwellings.

Public schools in Bankview include Richmond Elementary School and Mount Royal Junior High. Private schools include Sacred Heart Elementary School, as well as St. Monica and St. Michael, both of which offer elementary and junior high education.

Bel-Aire

Bel-Aire is one of the more affluent neighbourhoods in the south western portion of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. In the year 2000 the median household income was listed as $138,124. It is a rather small neighbourhood with a population or 494 listed as of 2006. All homes were single family structures and all were occupied by their owners.

The land Bel-Aire sits on became part of the City of Calgary in 1954 with the neighbourhood being established later in 1960. The Elbow River and the Glenmore Reservoir are to the west and the district of Meadowlark Park and the Chinook Shopping Centre are on the eastern edge. The northern border is framed by the Calgary Country Club and its golf course.

The Christopher Robin private school is the only educational facility within Bel-Aire’s borders. There is a Catholic school just a few blocks south of the district in the Mayfair neighbourhood. Meadowlark Park is an open green space adjacent to the district.

Braeside

Braeside is located in the south western portion of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Anderson Road frames its southern end, Southland Drive the northern end and 24th Street SW edges the west. 14th Street SW is to the east.

As of 2006 Braeside had 6,182 residents. The average household income, as of 2000 was listed at $57,728 with 9.9 percent of the population being in the lower income brackets. Just over 20 percent of the population were immigrants. Most homes were single family structures, with just over ten percent of residences being condominiums or apartments. Less than 20 percent of the housing were rentals.

There are two strip malls in the neighbourhood with such familiar brands as Shopper’s Drugs, Tim Hortons, Pizza Hut and KFC. Several convenience stores dot the area. As far as education, the area is home to the Braeside Elementary Public School. Residents have access to a junior high school that sits just north of the area.

Bridlewood

Bridlewood sits on the south western edge of Calgary, Alberta, Canada and is just north of the respected Spruce Meadows equestrian centre. The Spruce Meadows Trail is actually the southern border and the Evergreen neighbourhood is on the northern edge. The Bridlewood Wetland is to the west. The district is part of Ward 13 in the Calgary City Council.

As of 2006 there were 7,928 residents. The average household income, as of 2000, was listed as $70,477 with just over six percent of residents in the lower income brackets. Just over 15 percent of residents were immigrants. All homes were single family structures with just over four percent being rentals.

Bridlewood is served by the Glenmore Christian Academy, the Monsignor J.J. O’Brien Catholic School and the Bridlewood Elementary. The closest shopping is along 162nd Avenue SW, which is just north of the district.

Britannia

The land upon which Britannia sits was annexed to the City of Calgary back in 1910 but the neighbourhood was not established until much later, in 1956. During the latter half of the 1950s the area flourished and much of the development occurred at that time.

Britannia Drive edges the northern border, Elbow Drive frames the east and 50th Avenue S brings up the south. Riverdale Park and the Elbow River share the western edge.

As of 2006, Britannia had 784 residents. Surveys taken in 2000 showed the average household income to be $120,387 with just under 8 percent of residents in the lower income brackets. Just under 17 percent of the population were immigrants. Most of the homes were single family structures with 19 percent of the available housing market being condos or apartment buildings. Roughly 19 percent of homes were rentals.

One Catholic school, one public school and the private Montessori pre-school all service the area. The closest shopping mall is the Chinook Centre to the south.

Canyon Meadows

Located in the south western portion of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, the district of Canyon Meadows has been around since 1963. It is part of the Ward 13 district on the Calgary City Council. Anderson Road makes up the northern border, 14th Street W is on the western edge and the Macleod Trail frames the east. Canyon Meadows Drive and the Fish Creek Provincial Park share the southern border. Just to the north west of the neighbourhood is the Canyon Meadows golf course.

Almost 20 percent of the population were immigrants. Most homes were single family dwellings with only ten percent being apartments or condos. Cedarbrae

Cedarbrae, founded in 1973, sits in the south western quarter of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The land was actually annexed to the city in 1956. Southland Drive is on the northern edge, Anderson Road frames the south and 24th Street W brings up the east. The Tsuu T’ina first nation lands border the west. Cedarbrae is part of the Ward 11 district on Calgary City Council.

The population was listed at 6,441 as of 2006. Figures from 2000 show the average household income at $62,063. A little over 11 percent of residents fell into the lower income brackets. Chinook Park

Chinook Park is located in the south western end of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Glenmore Trail borders the north, Heritage Drive the south and Elbow Drive frames the east. The western edge is 14th Street West. The district was founded in 1959 and is part of Ward 11 on the Calgary City Council.

The area is blessed with plenty of open green space including Chinook Park within the neighbourhood and Kelvin Grove Park, just across the northern border.

Christie Park

The Christie Park neighbourhood is located in Calgary, Alberta in the southwestern part of the metro area. Its boundaries include Strathcona Park at north and Sarcee Trail at the east. Cliff Bungalow

Cliff Bungalow is a community of homes located in the southwest area of Calgary. It runs mainly along 5th Street S.W., and its borders include Uptown 17th Avenue at the north, the Elbow River at the south, Fourth Street at the east and Mount Royal at the west.

The neighbourhood exists on land that was originally under the ownership of the Canadian Pacific Railroad during the 1870s. The City of Calgary annexed the land from 1906 to 1912, and the community was officially established by 1907. Today, according to the 2008 census, Cliff Bungalow has 1,861 residents, and this number has decreased slightly (2.8 percent) since 2004. There is some mobility in the area, as shown by the statistic that almost 29 percent of Cliff Bungalow dwellers moved in a one-year period between 2005 and 2006.

Apartment and condominium buildings account for almost 92 percent of the neighbourhood’s homes. Single-family houses comprise 8.5 percent of its housing stock. Some 72 percent of the dwellings in the community are rental units.

Crestmont

Crestmont is an upscale residential community in Calgary, Alberta, with a population in 2006 of 927. The neighbourhood is located in the city’s southwest area and lies to the south of the Trans-Canada Highway. The commute to downtown Calgary is about 20 minutes, and Crestmont is approximately one hour away from resort areas such as Banff and Canmore. Its ridge area features magnificent mountain views.

Discovery Ridge

The affluent area of Discovery Ridge is located on the south western edge of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. At one time the area was called New Discovery and when construction began in the 1990s it was intended to be a gated community. As of 2007, the population was listed at 3,804. Statistics as of 2000 show the average household income, some of the highest in Calgary, at $128,844. No residents were listed in the low income bracket. Over 32 percent of residents were immigrants. Housing was made up of estate homes and single family dwelling with none being used as rentals.

The closest schools are to the east of Discovery Ridge. One is the Menno Simons Christian School; another is part of the Calgary Public School system.

Eagle Ridge

The smallish neighbourhood of Eagle Ridge is located in the south western quarter of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. 14th Street W is on the eastern edge, to the north is the Glenmore Trail and the west is framed by the Glenore Reservoir. Eagle Ridge is just east of the Heritage Park Village and just south of the Rockyview General Hospital. It is part of the Ward 11 district on the Calgary City Council.

Elboya

Schools in the area include the Catholic St. Anthony’s and the public Elboya Bilingual Elementary/Junior High. The closest major shopping mall is the Chinook Centre to the south.

Erlton

One of Calgary’s inner-city neighbourhoods, Erlton is located in the city’s southwest region. Its boundaries include the Elbow River at the west and north, Spiller Road at the east and Mission Road at the south. The Talisman Centre is one of the main features of the community.

The community was established in 1906. Per the 2008 census, its population of 1,191 experienced a slight decline of two percent since 2004. Mission

An inner-city community in Calgary, the Mission was originally established as Notre Dame de la Paix as a Catholic mission. At one point, it was designated as the Village of Rouleauville. Its boundaries include Calgary’s midtown to the north, the Roxboro neighbourhood to the south, Talisman Centre to the east and Cliff Bungalow to the west.

Mount Royal

Mount Royal is a part of Calgary that includes the Upper Mount Royal and Lower Mount Royal neighbourhoods. The two areas are divided by an escarpment running parallel to Royal and Cameron Avenues.

With Elbow Park, Upper Mount Royal is an upscale neighbourhood that was established in 1904. Some of the city’s oldest homes of nearly 100 years in age are located there, but new-construction housing exists as well. The neighbourhood was at one time composed largely of prosperous American-born people, and was at one time called “American Hill.” Even by 2001, immigrants from the U.S. still account for more than 29 percent of the area’s population.

The neighbourhoods’ boundaries include 17th Avenue S.W. to the north and 14th Street S.W. to the west. The populations of Upper Mount Royal and Lower Mount Royal were 2,613 and 3,288 respectively, in 2006. According to the 2000 census, Upper Mount Royal residents enjoyed a median household income of $127,135. The median household income in 2000 for Lower Mount Royal was considerably less, at $35,570. Lower-income dwellers account for 11.7 percent and 26.7 percent of Upper Mount Royal and Lower Mount Royal. Single-family houses comprise 87.2 percent of homes in Upper Mount Royal. However, apartment and condominium residences prevail in Lower Mount Royal, amounting to 88.7 percent of all dwellings in the neighbourhood, resulting in nearly 78 percent of the homes used as rental properties.

Patterson

The Patterson residential community is located in the southwestern area of Calgary, Alberta. The average condominium unit sold for $359,057 in the same year. In 2000, it was reported that 23 percent of its housing stock was used for rental purposes.

The Richmond neighbourhood is located in Calgary’s southwest area. It spans both east and west of Crowchild Trail. Its south border is a hill that is a portion of Battalion Park. The park commemorates four Army battalions that trained at the location during World War I. The land on which Signal Hill was developed was annexed in 1956, and the neighbourhood was established in the year 1986.

Residential development initiated in 1990. Approximately 79 percent of the homes are single-family dwellings. The average sale price of a single-family home in 2009 was $606,758, and the average sale price of a condominium unit was $317,233. Some four percent of Signal Hill’s homes are used for rental purposes. Median household income as of 2000 was $83,764, and as of 2006, the community had a population of 14,076.

Three elementary schools, Battalion Park, Glenbrook and Glamorgan, serve children in grades K-6. St. Thomas Aquinas is a private elementary school. Private junior high and high schools include St. Gregory and St. Francis, respectively.

Springbank Hill

Springbank Hill is an upscale residential community close to the western boundary of Calgary, Alberta. Development of homes began in 1978. The land on which it lies was annexed in 1994 to the City of Calgary, and was established in 1999 as a community. Springbank Hill’s community association was developed in 2001. Its northern border is 17th Avenue South, the southern boundary is Glenmore Trail, the eastern border consists of 69th Street West and the western border is represented by the Stoney Trail area.

The neighbourhood’s population was 5,073 in 2006, and the median income was $101,603 in 2000. Approximately 90 percent of its dwellings are single-family homes, and about four percent of the homes are rented. The average single-family home sold for $1,222,854 in 2009. The average condominium sale price for the same year was $447,278,

Public schools include Battalion Park and Glenbrook elementaries, A.E. Cross Junior High and Ernest Manning High School. Students may also attend a number of private elementary, junior high and high schools.

Strathcona Park

Strathcona Park is a residential community in Calgary, Alberta’s southwestern area. Bow Trail is its northern boundary, Sarcee Trail represents its eastern border, Christie Park is to the south and 85 St. W. is its western border. The Municipal District of Rocky View annexed the Christie Park land in 1956 to the City of Calgary. Strathcona Park’s establishment as a community occurred in 1980.

In 2006, 7,270 people lived in Strathcona Park, and a median household income of $105,139 was reported in 2000. In 2009, the average single-family home sold for $630,679, and the average condominium sold for $459,900.

Public schools include Olympic Heights Elementary School, Vincent Massey Junior High School and Ernest Manning High School. Private schools include Quintillian Private School of Kingston and John Costello Elementary School. St. Mary’s and Bishop Carroll are nearby private high schools.

Sunalta

Situated in Calgary’s southwest area, the Sunalta neighbourhood is bounded by the north by the Bow River, and lies east of the Scarboro neighbourhood. The Crowchild Trail is its western boundary, and the Bankview neighbourhood lies to the south. An older community, Sunalta was established in 1910. Its land, once owned by the Canadian Pacific Railway, had been annexed in 1907 to Calgary.

Sunalta’s residences represent a combination of apartment and condominium buildings as well as a smaller number of single-family houses. More than 85 percent of its dwellings are multi-family units, and 83 percent of the homes are rental properties. Single-family homes account for 5.8 percent of all Sunalta homes, according to 2006 information. A redevelopment plan exists in the neighbourhood. Per the 2008 census, 3,236 people lived in Sunalta, representing an increase of four percent over 2005. Data from 2006 indicate a large amount of mobility within residents, as 45 percent moved during the previous year. According to the 2000 census, the neighbourhood’s median income was $32,409.

Students may attend the Sunalta and Sacred Heart public elementary schools.

West Springs

A newer community in the Calgary, Alberta area, West Springs was annexed in 1995 to the City of Calgary. It was established as a community in 2001. It is located in the southwest area of Calgary. Its western border is composed of the Springbank housing development. The eastern boundary is 69th Street West and the southern border is represented by Bow Trail. The neighbourhood’s north border is the Cougar Ridge housing community, Old Banff Coach Road and the Canada Olympic Park.

Only five years after its establishment, West Springs’ population registered 5,309 in 2006. In 2000, the earliest year for which information is available, the neighbourhood’s household income averaged $88,328. All homes in West Springs are single-family houses, and approximately six percent of them are used as rental dwellings. In 2009, the average home sold for $800,482.

Students in West Springs may attend elementary school at Glenbrook or Glamorgan, junior high at A. E. Cross and high school at Ernest Manning. Private schools include Glamorgan’s St. Andrew Elementary, Glendale Meadows’ St. Gregory Elementary and as well as St. Mary's High School in downtown Calgary or Bishop Carroll High School.

Wildwood

Calgary’s Wildwood neighbourhood is located in the city’s southwest region. Its boundaries include Edworthy Park to the north, which is a large nature park. Another northern boundary is the Bow River. Its eastern neighbour is the Spruce Cliff community, and its southern boundary is Bow Trail, which has been undergoing improvement to accommodate burgeoning traffic.

Established in the 1950s, Wildwood’s population is 2600, according to the 2008 census. Its population has remained consistent since 2004. The community exhibits stability among its dwellers, as the 2006 survey indicates that only ten percent of its residents moved within the past 12 months. Wildwood’s 2005 median household income of $94,337 increased by 14 percent from 2000.

Single-family homes account for nearly 98 percent of Wildwood’s residences, and semi-detached houses make up the remaining two percent. Nearly 91 percent of the neighbourhood’s homes are owner-occupied.

Public schools include Wildwood Elementary School and Vincent Massey Junior High School, as well as Ernest Manning and Western Canada High Schools. Private schools in the area include St. Michael Elementary and Junior High School, as well as Bishop Carroll and St. Mary’s High Schools.
