The neighbourhood exists on land that was originally under the ownership of the Canadian Pacific Railroad during the 1870s. The City of Calgary annexed the land from 1906 to 1912, and the community was officially established by 1907. Rezoning in 1935 permitted the community to diversify from single-family homes to multi-family dwellings. Today, according to the 2008 census, Cliff Bungalow has 1,861 residents, and this number has decreased slightly (2.8 percent) since 2004. There is some mobility in the area, as shown by the statistic that almost 29 percent of Cliff Bungalow dwellers moved in a one-year period between 2005 and 2006.

Apartment and condominium buildings account for almost 92 percent of the neighbourhood’s homes. Single-family houses comprise 8.5 percent of its housing stock. Some 72 percent of the dwellings in the community are rental units.

Public schools in Cliff Bungalow include the Rideau Park elementary and junior high schools, as well as Western Canada High School. Private schools include Rideau Park elementary and junior high schools, as well as Western Canada High School.
