The land upon which Britannia sits was annexed to the City of Calgary back in 1910 but the neighbourhood was not established until much later, in 1956. During the latter half of the 1950s the area flourished and much of the development occurred at that time.

Britannia Drive edges the northern border, Elbow Drive frames the east and 50th Avenue S brings up the south. Riverdale Park and the Elbow River share the western edge.

As of 2006, Britannia had 784 residents. Surveys taken in 2000 showed the average household income to be $120,387 with just under 8 percent of residents in the lower income brackets. Just under 17 percent of the population were immigrants. Most of the homes were single family structures with 19 percent of the available housing market being condos or apartment buildings. Roughly 19 percent of homes were rentals.

One Catholic school, one public school and the private Montessori pre-school all service the area. The closest shopping mall is the Chinook Centre to the south.
