Situated in the southwest region of Calgary, Bankview’s history dates back to 1882, when William Nimmons bought the land on which the neighbourhood lies from the Hudson’s Bay Company. Nimmons founded the 3-D Bar Ranch on the land, and subsequently added a sandstone quarry. He also built the Mount Royal Theatre. Nimmons’ home, constructed in 1884, was later designated a heritage building and is located in Bankview’s northeast area.

Nimmons began to subdivide his land in 1902, selling it to settlers that had recently arrived in the area. The City of Calgary purchased the rest of Nimmons’ land in 1908. In 1950, the neighbourhood saw a significant redesign that permitted the construction of apartment buildings. A redevelopment program is in place for Bankview.
